popcornAt 2:00 p.m. the mystery, thriller, and love story “Witness” will be shown at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in the Meeting Room.

Harrison Ford stars as John Book, the Philadelphia police detective, who not only has a murderer to capture, but also a young witness, Samuel, and his mother, Rachel, to protect.

The film begins on an Amish settlement in Pennsylvania, where for 200 years a self-sufficient, religious community has proudly held onto the ways of their ancestors.  The Amish are deeply suspicious of outsiders and stubbornly dedicated to their rural lifestyle, with no autos or electricity and hooks instead of buttons.

After the death of her husband, Amish woman Rachel Lapp takes her son on a train trip to Philadelphia.  In the bathroom of the train station, 8-year-old Samuel witnesses a murder and then helps Detective John Book with the investigation.  Book discovers that people within the police force are involved, and both he and Samuel are targeted.  Book asks, with Rachel’s help, to stay in the Amish community and protect Samuel, as his only “witness” and solve the case.  Book and Rachel find themselves growing attracted to each other.  They are aware that unless one of them is willing to leave behind “their entire world,” this love can never be.

The film is a thrilling mystery, a poignant love story, and a clash of cultures.  It will prove to be just “the ticket” for a hot summer day in the air-conditioned library–with free popcorn and drink.  Donations are accepted.

See you at the movies!
