Stephen W. Brumitt, 73, of Dowell, IL, died Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at his daughter’s home in Morrison, IL.
Steve was born October 25, 1952, in Carbondale, IL, to Roy and Helen L. (Hicks) Brumitt. He was a 1970 graduate of Carbondale Community High School. On May 14, 1971, he married Ruth Ann Yates in Carbondale. Steve worked as a United Mine Worker for 18 years, before beginning a 20-year career with Walmart in Carbondale, where he later retired. He was a member of the United Mine Workers Association. Steve enjoyed fishing; was an avid NASCAR fan; loved spending time working on jigsaw puzzles. Above all, he was a devoted North Carolina Tar Heels fan.
Survivors include his daughters, Jennifer Sheehan of Nashville, TN, and Rebecca (Mark) Coons of Morrison; son, Stephen “Bo” Brumitt of Olympia, WA; eight grandchildren, Nicholas (fiancée, Kali Crace) Brumitt, Lauren Sheehan, Jessica (Nate) Wilkerson, Claire (Cody) Vanderlaan, Zachary Coons, RyAnn Brumitt, Sophia Brumitt, and Liberty Brumitt; sister, Lana (Fred) Meyers of Jasper, TN; niece, Brittany Meyers; nephew, Justin Meyers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth Ann; sister, Anita Kay Brumitt.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Interment will be at Carterville Community Cemetery in Carterville, IL.
A memorial has been established to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
