Spring road weight limits, often called “Frost Laws,” are seasonal restrictions designed to protect road damage during the spring thaw.  As the ground thaws, the roadbed becomes unstable and saturated with moisture, making it highly susceptible to cracking or collapsing under heavy loads.

Temporary, usually 90-day, postings typically are implemented from mid-February to mid-April, as frozen ground thaws and weakens pavement.  Signs on County or Township roads restrict maximum axle and gross vehicle weights.

The Whiteside County Highway Department has announced the posting of spring weight limits for County Highways.  These postings will go into effect on Friday, February 20, 2026, and will remain in effect until further notice.

Township roads may vary, so it is suggested that each Township be contacted regarding their postings.
