The Monday, January 22, 2024, meeting of the Morrison School Board received an Agenda that included the resignation of current Superintendent Scott Vance. Without fanfare or explanation, the Board voted unanimously to accept the resignation effective Monday, July 1, 2024.

The Action before the resignation included a lengthy discussion of whether to build a greenhouse on the school lawn. Ownership, responsibilities, and usage were among the main concerns among Board members.  FFA alumni are instrumental in the funding and construction of the glass structure, with the District accepting ownership upon completion.  Following the discussion of the issues of concern, the action received a unanimous vote of approval.

Another item of contention was the cost of installing a new electronic sign at Morrison Junior High.  For $22,410 the entire interior working of the current signage would be replaced. Principal Joe Robbins reminded the Board that the previous sign carried event announcements, daily menus, and important event updates. It was seen by the many parents as they carried their students to-and-from school each day. The final vote received two abstentions which did not leave the majority vote needed for approval, and the motion failed.

Superintendent Vance’s report noted that January enrollment was down 17 from the December enrollment and down ten from the same time in 2023.  He also reported that project plans are going forward for resurfacing the athletic track at Morrison High School and door replacements at Southside School.

Without details being offered, the Board approved the 2024-2025 MCUD 6 School Calendar and the selection of an architect to be used for future facility alterations.

In personnel matters:

Resignations: Sara Perry (1:1 Aide at Northside School)

Hires: Jon Eastlick (Volunteer Wrestling Coach at MJHS)

Dan Sitzmore (7th Grade Girls Basketball Coach at MJHS.)

The next MCUD 6 Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 26, at the District Office. 100 E. Knox Street, Morrison, IL.
