First shown on December 4, 1977, “The Gathering” is a heart-warming movie about family, forgiveness, and love.
Adam Thornton, played by Asner, is an ill-tempered man who abandoned his family of four children and wife years before. He has learned he has only a limited time left to live. Wanting to make peace with his family, he confides his sad news and his “plan” to his estranged wife Kate, played by Stapleton.
He invites his four adult children for Christmas at his house, because the doctor has told him he may not travel. Most of them are not fond of their father, because of his stubbornness and his having left them. Adam insists to Kate that their children not be told of his imminent death.
