In 1930, the U. S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), “was established to provide more progressive and humane care for Federal inmates at the 11 Federal prisons in operation at the time.  Today the Bureau consists of” 121 institutions–with Administrative United States Penitentiary Thomson the latest

“The Bureau is responsible for the custody and care of approximately 219,000 Federal offenders.”  When it becomes fully activated in two years, AUSP Thomson will house 1900 high security inmates and have 200 minimum security beds available

“Approximately 38,000 BOP employees ensure the security of Federal prisons, provide inmates with needed programs and services, and model mainstream values.”  There will be 1100 jobs created staff employed at AUSP Thomson.

BOP offers career positions in law enforcement and non-law enforcement.  “All Bureau of Prisons staff share a common role as ‘Correctional Workers First,’ requiring a mutual responsibility for maintaining safe and secure institutions regardless of one’s position, tenure, or other factors.  The BOP requires high standards of safety, security, sanitation, and discipline, which promotes a physical and emotionally sound environment for both staff and inmates.”

Regarding AUSP Thomson staff, FBOP Director Charles Samuels stated Monday, August 18, 2014, “We plan to begin hiring in the local community in the very near future.  These positions will be posted on the usajobs.gov website where applications are completed online.”  Interested parties should search www.usajobs.gov for current vacancies.  “Contact the North Central Region’s Human Resources for information at thomsonjob@bop.gov.  We need your support to help us recruit, particularly for specialty areas like physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and teachers.”
