Andresen Nature Center, 409 N. Fourth Street, Fulton, IL, will celebrate the remnant prairies in Whiteside County, during Dutch Days, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6. The Backyard Prairies Program stresses the importance of keeping prairies interconnected. Andresen Nature Center contains a small reconstructed prairie.

Located about 50 yards from the Mississippi River and adjacent to Heritage Canyon, Andresen Nature Center is dedicated to providing insight, information, appreciation, and conservation of our local natural resources.

Admire 50 taxidermy displays of 30 species, including a new fawn lying beneath a buck and doe.

Watch bees in two Observation Beehives. There is a large display of free-form honeycomb, which still contains golden honey. Sample three local flavors.

Also, taste a blend of silver maple and walnut syrup, from trees tapped in January and February.

Children may participate in a number of fun activities:

  • make “silhouette” sun prints with found objects (if the sun cooperates.)
  • use a vacuum gun to collect and view bugs, NOT BEES, then release them.
  • follow the Storybook Trail from station-to-station, reading the pages.
  • observe bee larvae eat their way out of the honeycomb
  • enjoy hands-on-activities.
