The Sisters of St. Francis Franciscan Peace Center will hold a free film screening of “Becoming an American,” on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at The Canticle, 841 13th Avenue N., Clinton, IA.
Until recently, the political consensus about immigration in America was essentially that we are a Nation of immigrants, made stronger by our diversity. While Democrats and Republicans may have differed about how to regulate the flow of newcomers to our shores, thoughtful leaders across the spectrum have embraced immigration as an integral component of America’s greatness.
“We Are Witnesses: Becoming an American” is a series of short films. Each gives a glimpse into the stories of people whose lives have been touched by immigration, from refugees and families, to border control agents and immigration judges. Together, these stories help us understand what it is like, away from the headlines, to become an American today. They remind us of the steep price many are still willing to pay, to leave their countries of birth, in order to live in the United States.
