The Friends of Odell Public Library offer an exciting opportunity to see and hear about the world of Dubai, on Monday, April 8, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. Wolfgang and Kathy Schmidt of Morrison, IL, will present a slide show and discussion on the intriguing city, at 307 S. Madison Street, in the library’s Program Room.
Dubai is situated on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf, in the United Arab Emirates. In 2015 the Schmidts traveled to visit their son, who had taken a position with the Atlantis Resort on the Palm in Dubai.
Home to the tallest building, largest mall, and world’s only indoor ski resort, Dubai is a fascinating city.
The history of Dubai dates back to 3000 BC, when nomadic cattle herders inhabited it. After thousands of years, it became a separate sheikhdom in 1833. The invention of artificial pearls in 1926 and the Great Depression of 1929 caused a collapse in the pearl market. Looking for an alternative source of revenue, the emir invited traders to settle there without paying any tax. Thus, Dubai became one of the [most successful] ports and exporters in the world. The discovery of oil in 1966 changed the Country again and led to Dubai becoming a vibrant, modern city.
Through their slideshow and talk, the Schmidts will share this bigger-than-life city, its customs, culture, and history.
